A message to you all from Akira Masuda (President of IBMA)
Freestyle Karate was first conceptualized 5 years ago by myself along with a small group of like-minded martial artists a style where techniques from a wide range of martial arts as opposed to just karate could be effectively used.
Freestyle Karate aims to be a universal platform of sorts which gives practitioners of many styles of martial art to use their techniques. In other words, it is a concept which pays respect to the many styles of martial arts and allows them to showcase their strengths.
On a sobering note, mankind also possesses the drive to commit endless violence and the effects of that are prevalent in our world today.
I see this as a manifestation of one’s inability to see themselves and others objectively as well as a sense of territory and the need to differentiate themselves from the rest.
On the other hand, man possesses empathy and the ability to share the emotion held by others (This is what I call Kokoro).
I was left wondering if there was any way for one to interact and gain an understanding of others whilst bearing those emotions in mind. Also could there be a way to channel the inherent violence and aggression caused by man’s own emotions and conscience to something more positive?
The answer I reached was Freestyle Karate. A new sport / martial art.
In such a sport, I felt that a level of transparency and clarity where all parties can be happy with. It also needed to be receptive of techniques from other styles which would be fused into it as well as a form of creativity that would allow such techniques to be given value and even become the cause for one to come up with new techniques. So, it is a system that requires “Clarity”, “Receptiveness” as well as “Creativity”. This is what Freestyle Karate is about.
Once, a compatriot of mine named such an entity budo.
The west named the same thing a sport.
This may raise a few objections, but that is the way I see it.
What I envision is the creation of a new budo-sport which will see the fusion of those two different ideals held in both the east and the west.
My greatest wish would be for this new budo-sport to help in the process of humans living in the 21st century reclaiming their humanity as well as being a form of character building.
However, IBMA as an organisation are weak and we are constantly in the lookout for new partners. If you agree with the principles of our IBMA Freestyle Karate project, then we would dearly like you to come to the Yoyogi gymnasium in February 2014 to be a part of it.
You may come as a competitor or as a volunteer and help the running of the event. After the competition, there will be seminars held over a few days which are designed to certify referees for Freestyle Karate as well as potential instructors. There are also plans to hold conferences where national IBMA representatives will be appointed.
Details of the conference as well as applications to for attendances will be announced at a later date (IBMA memberships are accepted all around the year)
Please become our partner in spreading this new budo-sport. I will be waiting for you all in Japan.
